Amoxicillin – What You Should Know About This Drug
Amoxicillin is a drug synthesized after the penicillin, but highly improved to be more effective, more powerful and fast acting antibiotic. It is found under many brand names such as Amoxil, Dispermox, Larotid Suspension, Moxtag, Polymox Suspension, Trimox, Trimox Pediatric Drops and Wymox among others. Some of these drugs are also available in the generic form.
How Is Amoxicillin Taken?
Amoxicillin comes in the form of suspension (liquid form), capsule, chewable tablet, regular tablet and pediatric drops. The medication is usually prescribed to be taken twice a day (every 12 hours) or thrice a day (every 8 hours). For best effect it should be taken at the same time every day. It is very important that Amoxicillin is taken exactly as it is prescribed by the doctor.
Ask the doctor all the details you need to know and take the medication as indicated. Ensure that you consume the drug as it is indicated – right dosage, right time and right way:
* Suspension needs to be shaken before consumption;
* Count the drops carefully when you administer the drug to infants/ young children; you may mix the drops in the milk or fruit juice or ginger ale, etc.
* Crush the chewable tablets if you are not comfortable chewing them; however, it is best that you do chew them;
* The regular tablets should be swallowed whole with the help of a glass of water.
