Tinidazole: Medical Facts You Should Know About This Drug
It is an anti parasitic and anti infective drug and is mostly indicated in protozoal infections. In the developing countries this drug is used for eradication of amoebic and parasitic infections. Tinidazole works by stopping the growth of some specific bacterial and protozoal organisms. The drug interferes with the enzyme synthesis in these organisms thus effectively killing them.
The development of this drug took place in the year 1972.

Anti parasitic drug belonging to the class of Nitroimidazoles. The trade name varies with the country or region it is used in for example in the Asian continent mostly known as sporinex. The generic name is Tinidazole. This drug is chemically like Metronidazole but the same effect of metronidazole can be achieved by a much lower dosage and shorter course by Tinidazole.
What is Tinidazole used for?
• It can be used for a variety of amoebic infections.
• It is indicated in infections like giardiasis and trichomoniasis.
• It is useful in cases of bacterial vaginosis and other bacterial infections of the vagina.
• In some cases of stomach ulcers it is indicated as a part of combination therapy against the organism helicobacter pylori.
How should you take the drug?
The drug is available in tablet form and in form of syrups and should always be taken with or after meals and never on an empty stomach.
Dosage depends on your condition, its severity and your body weight. Usually in uncomplicated cases the tablet is taken once a day for 2 to 5 days. The average daily dose is 2gm per day for 3 days in case of adults but for children it is 30 to 50 gm per kg of body weight per day.
The drug works best if taken at or around the same time every day.
Doses should not be missed but if you do you should take it as soon as you remember but if it is already time for your next dosage do not double your dose.
The medicine should be properly stored in a cool dry place at a temperature between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.
Contraindications and precautions:
The drug is classified as a category C for use in pregnant women which implies that in animal research models the drug was found to be harmful to the fetus and no human studies have been carried out but in cases of benefits outweighing the risk factors this drug can be administered. It is absolutely contraindicated for use in pregnant women in the first trimester. It is contraindicated in breastfeeding women.
Basic precautions are that its use should be monitored if taking with any other antibiotics, or blood thinning medications. It may alter some test results like liver enzyme function tests etc. should also be carefully used in patients with medical conditions like brain or nervous system disorder, or any pre exiting allergies.
In addition to this the drug may interact with other drugs most important of which is disulfiram which shouldn’t be taken during and until 2 weeks after treatment with Tinidazole. Alcohol consumption should be stopped during treatment.
